I was born and raised on my family's farm and ranch on the dry high plains near Lamar, Colorado. I graduated from Lamar High School in 2002, and the pinnacles of my very, very busy high school years were serving as the student body president and as chaplain of the football team.
From 2002 to 2005 I attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, majoring in Religious Studies and taking a sizeable amount of Economics classes. During my time at CU my main activity was helping to lead the United Methodist campus ministry. I graduated in May of 2006, having completed my final courses by correspondence.
I took a break from CU in the Fall of 2003 to join the Army National Guard and completed Military Police basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in December of that year. During the first three months of 2004 I then served as a full time residential volunteer with the Denver chapter of the Guardian Angels, conducting safety patrols and community outreach in downtown Denver.
In August of 2005 I moved to the Washington D.C. area to attend Wesley Theological Seminary. I served as the Ministerial Intern at Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist Church while I studied at Wesley.
In August of 2006 I moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. From October to February 2007 I worked as a security guard supervisor, and then attended Andover Newton Theological School.
My Army National Guard Unit, the 972nd Military Police Company was activated in July of 2007. We trained for 3 months at Ft. Dix, New Jersey and then deployed to Baghdad, Iraq until June of 2008. While in Baghdad we provided security and motorcade escorts for top Iraqi and US government officials. My squad was assigned to protect Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi. While in Iraq I was advanced to the rank of Corporal, served as a team leader for two other soldiers, and was recognized for my leadership by earning the battallion level Hero of the Month award for December.
In September of 2008 I resumed my studies at Andover Newton Theological School and served for one year as a student pastor at Calvary Church, United Methodist in Arlington, Massachusetts.
In June of 2009 I relocated to Denver, Colorado. In October I began work with the Internal Revenue Service as an individual tax law assistor.
My passion for service has taken me on United Methodist related short term service trips to Romania in 2002 to work with orphans, to Mexico in 2003 to help renovate a church, to Costa Rice in 2004 to help build a parsonage, and to Slidell, Louisiana in 2009 to rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
